Today I present you… – TARAN! – Another free pattern!!! And this is not just a free pattern, this is a free pattern for those friends that stick beside us no matter what, those friends that love you even when you feel fat, or grumpy or have a bad breath! Those friends who are always happy to see you and always have an empathetic eye! I am talking about dogs, of course (although I share the same deal of afection towards other 4 legged friends)!
Some time ago, a good friend of mine asked me if I could make a set of booties for her dog because he had a terrible rash in his paws and I decided to take the challenge! Gathered my yarn and my crochet hooks, put my imagination to work and I came up with this fun set of dog booties. This is my tribute to all these sweet caring creatures all over the world!

Dog Booties – Free Crochet Pattern
Material:
4 mm crochet hook
8 ply acrylic yarn in two different colours
Instructions:
With main colour and working in spiral:
Sole
row 1 – ch2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
row 2 – 2 sc in each sc (12 sts)
row 3 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, repeat (18 sts)
row 4 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, repeat (24 sts)
row 5 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, repeat (30 sts)
row 6 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 4 sc, repeat (36 sts)
Foot
row 7 – sc around in back loops only (36 sts)
row 8 to 11 – sc around (36 sts)
row 12 – sc in next 12 sc, sc2tg x6, sc in next 12 sc (30 sts)
row 13 – sc around (30 sts)
row 14 – sc in next 9 sc, sc2tg x6, sc in next 9 sc (24 sts)
Leg
rows 15 to 22 – sc around (24 sts)
row 23 – hdc around, fasten off (24 sts)
Lacy cuff
With wrong side facing you, attach contrasting colour at the back (you will be working around on the wrong side):
row 24 – ch3, sk next st, ss in next, repeat around
row 25 – ch1, sc in ch3 space, ch 3, sc in next ch3 space, repeat around, ss in first ch
Repeat row 25 until desire length (I worked 5 rows), fasten off.
Cord: ch80.
Interweave cord around row 23, leaving ends hanging in the front under cuff. Use it to tie around doggy’s leg. If your dog has smaller paws, omit row 6.
It should look something like this:
Now both go out for a walk and show off! 🙂

What is sc2tg x6?? Please helppp

Hi Siandra! sc2tg stands for single crochet 2 together (so you work the two stitches from the row bellow in one stitch). It’s also known as a single crochet decrease. x6 means that you are going to be making this decrease 6 times. Hope that helps! Otherwise, drop me an email!

Hello, I’m delighted to find these and thank you for making the pattern available. I do have a couple of questions. At the end of row 1 are we supposed to join into the first sc with a slip stitch and then start row 2 with the 2 sc in each sc of row 1, or, upon reaching the first sc of row 1, do we start row 2 with 2 sc in each sc of row 1? I’m assuming at the ends of each row we’re not chaining one and turning?

Hi Valeie! Thank you for dropping by! The rows are made in spiral, so that means you will not join to first stitch (nor chaining and turning), just continue working over the stitches of the previous round. Sorry, I should have made it clear in the pattern that it’s worked in spiral… Did that help? 🙂

These are cute. How can I adjust the pattern for a min pin or chihuahua foot?

Hi Rita! Rows 1-6 will make up the base of the foot. For a chihuahua I reckon rows 1 to 2 or 3 will be enough. Then jump straight to row 7 (which for you will be 3 or 4 and working less stitches). Continue as pattern bearing in mind that you’ll be working less stitches on each row. On rows 12 and 14, the decreases serve to form the shape at the front of the foot. For a smaller size, probably 2 or 3 decreases will be enough. I think this might do the trick. Try it out and let me know!

Hi there. I work in a dogs and cats home and I’m looking to make these for a terrier that i work with who has very sore feet. He’s in need of a little extra TLC while we find him a new home. Will this pattern fit any sized feet?

Hi Jodie! These booties fit a medium sized dog, like a staffy. You can adapt the pattern by reducing or increasing the nr of rounds in the sole and then continue as the pattern but with more stitches on each round. You can also stitch some padding to the sole of the booties for extra comfort. Hope he gets better soon and finds a loving forever home real real quick!!!

Hi Beverly! To increase the size of the booties you have 2 options: the easiest is to work the pattern with a thicker yarn and larger hook; the other option is adapting the pattern, increasing the nr of rounds/rows on the sole in the following way:
Sole:
Row 7 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, repeat (42 sts)
Row 8 – 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 6 sc, repeat (48 sts)
and so on… notice that the number of sc in between each 2 sc is increasing by 1 on each row and the total nr of stitches of each row (or round) increases by 6. Work as many rows as you need increasing in this way until the sole is slightly bigger than the base of your pet’s paw.
You will work as in the rest of the pattern but with a higher stitch count on each row. You might want to work a few more rows 8-11 until it is high enough to fit your furry friend’s paws. On rows 12 and 14, you might have to work a few more sc2tg. These decreases serve to reduce the diameter of the boot to the thickness of the leg after the largest section of the paw. I think that’s it! Hope these instructions were clear enough! Let me know if you need any further help. I would love to see the finished booties! 😀

That is lovely Mart! I am sure the shelter pooches will be very happy! I made these for my friend’s staffy but you can easily customise it. Just increase/decrease the number of rounds at the base and around the leg. Happy crocheting! 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you create!

I would know how to decrease the sole part by making less rounds but from round 12 on I would not know how to do them from the decreased size..Please help! I would only do 4 rounds for the sole, so I would stop at 24, but would not be able to figure out row 12 on after that 😦

Hey Cherie! Thank you for stopping by and sorry for the late reply! For smaller paws you have 2 options: work with thinner yarn and smaller hook or reduce the nr of rounds and stitchs. For the decreases you said, you can work round 12 like this: sc in next 8, sc2tg x4, sc in next 8. This round serves to shape the paw base section and continue to the leg, hence the sc2tg decreases. If you need the leg section to be smaller, just work more sc2tg decreases (instead of just 4). I hope this helps!

En ligne 6, tricoter 2 ms dans le même maille, puis 1 ms dans chacun des 4 maille suivants (c’est-à-dire 4 ms), puis tricoter à nouveau 2 ms dans une maille et ainsi de suite. J’espère que ça aide! My first boot didn’t turn out to well, I probably used to big of a hook. I have a small question though, did you use a smaller crochet hook for the sole and foot and a larger crochet hook on the leg section? From the picture the knit looks tighter towards the bottom than at the top. I’m using a smaller hook in the begging and I plan to use a bigger one towards the end to see if my project turns out better.
